Children's Dental Care

What Is Dentistry for Children?

A children's dentist trains as a general dentist first and then trains for another two years to specialize in child dental care. Our kid's dentist is enthusiastic about helping your child feel comfortable in our office, whether your child is here for a check-up or a more serious dental issue. Call us today if you've been wondering, "Where can I go for a skilled, compassionate children's dentist near me?"

When to Take A Child to the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines recommend that you bring your child to the dentist by the time your child is one year old. You should begin caring for your child's teeth as soon as you see baby teeth coming in by wiping them with a soft, wet washcloth at least twice a day.

During your baby's visit to our office, we'll talk to you about how to avoid childhood dental issues like baby bottle tooth decay, and we'll teach you how to care for your child's teeth at home. Contact us today to schedule your child's first visit.

What Happens During Your Child’s Visit to the Dentist?

First, our children's dentist will take a look at your child's teeth and jaw alignment. This exam can be performed while your child is sitting in your lap or in the dental chair. If x-rays are needed to further diagnose a cavity or another problem, our experienced hygienist will take x-rays of your child's teeth. In most cases, small children usually don't need x-rays.

Take a look below for some of our other kids dental care services:

Teeth Cleaning for Children

Toddler teeth cleanings can be stress-free with our team of experienced dentists and hygienists.

Fluoride

Teeth resist decay more easily when they are treated with a topical application of fluoride for children's teeth.

Dental Sealants

A thin plastic coating can be painted on to the chewing surface of your child's back teeth to protect against the development of cavities. The sealant provides protection for up to 10 years.

Fillings

Our children's dentist is adept at repairing decay-damaged teeth in kids of all ages. Our dentist will carefully remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the cavity with a tooth-colored composite or amalgam material.

Pediatric Crowns

Crowning baby teeth is sometimes necessary if the cavity is very large and cannot be repaired with a simple filling. The crown caps the tooth after the decay has been removed.

Mouthguards

The American Dental Association recommends that kids wear mouthguards while participating in sports like football, hockey, and basketball. These mouthguards cushion teeth from external blows. Kid's mouthguards are also helpful in protecting against damage caused by kids grinding their teeth at night.

When Will Baby’s First Teeth Emerge?

At about four to seven months of age, your baby will start to show the signs of teeth coming in.

When Do Baby Teeth Fall Out?

Most kids begin to lose baby teeth when they're 6 years old, but it can begin as early as 4 years old or as late as 7 years old. The final baby tooth to fall out usually occurs when kids are about 12 years old. If you have a concern about your child's baby teeth, talk to a children's dentist in Woodbridge.

What Are the Causes of Kids’ Toothaches?

A child may complain of a toothache if the tooth is trying to emerge or if the tooth has plaque buildup, a crack, a cavity, or decay.
