Were you aware that having healthy gums is an essential part of maintaining a healthy mouth? According to research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of the American population over the age of 30 have gum disease.
Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is a serious issue that can cause ligament and bone damage that may lead to the loss of your teeth. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It is characterized by having red and swollen gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. If caught and treated early on, permanent damage can be avoided.
A periodontist is a gum disease expert. In addition to undergoing the standard education and training that a dentist receives, a periodontist spends an additional two or three years studying the management of gum diseases, the placement of dental implants and cosmetic procedures like gum contouring and lip repositioning.

What Is a Periodontist?
As a gum disease specialist, a periodontist can diagnose and treat conditions that involve gum tissue. Here are some of the services that our periodontics office provides:
Periodontal disease treatment
Every time you eat or drink, a sticky substance caused plaque forms on the teeth. The bacteria that exists within plaque is what causes issues like cavities and gum disease. Plaque is kept under control via the frequent brushing and flossing of the teeth. If left untreated it attacks the gums, causing ligaments and bone to break down.
Dental implant placement
Dental implants are embedded within your jawbone and serve the purpose of mimicking the roots of the teeth. This allows them to work as a foundation for a bridge, denture, or crown. They are natural in appearance and last for a long time while preserving the jawbone. By preserving the jawbone, dental implants are able to keep the teeth within their proper position.
A gum disease specialist can also perform a procedure that can lengthen the appearance of a tooth. The crown of the tooth is located above the gum line. When a periodontist lengthens the crown, he or she reduces the amount of gum tissue around the tooth so that more of the crown appears. This is often done so that there is more room for a crown or bracket to be attached. The procedure is also performed for cosmetic reasons.
Gummy smile surgery
If you have teeth that appear to be shorter than average, it is probably caused by excess gum tissue around your teeth. Our periodontists at Taheri Dental Group can perform a gum contouring procedure that will correct this issue. This procedure consists of a gum disease expert shaping the gum tissue around the gum line.
Soft tissue graft/Gum graft
In cases where a patient has receding gums that have left the root of the tooth exposed, one of our periodontists will perform a gum grafting procedure. This procedure will cover the exposed area with gum tissue and will help to prevent bone loss and tooth decay.
Oral pathology and oral cancer diagnosis
Oral cancer is linked to HPV infections and smoking. One of the services that we offer at Taheri Dental Group includes oral cancer screening. Your periodontist will collect tissue samples from your mouth and send them out for diagnosis.
