They say that Virginia is for lovers, and there’s no greater place than Woodbridge to fall in love with at any time of the year. With its rich history and culture, there’s more to this town than meets the eye.
History of Woodbridge
The history of Woodbridge dates back to the 1600s, when Capt. John Smith came across an area of land that had been settled by native Americans called the Doegs. The area had abundant natural resources and was soon settled by Europeans. The land that would become present-day Woodbridge was acquired by George Mason in 1692, and it would stay in the Mason family for almost 160 years, until the plantation was sold in 1851. During this time, the Masons built a ferry to cross the Occoquan River, which cost 4 cents per person or horse to use. In the late 1700s, a wooden bridge was built across the river, which would eventually give the town its name. The Masons charged 6 cents per person or horse to cross the wooden bridge.
Before modern housing developments were built, Woodbridge largely consisted of dairy farms. These farms thrived until after World War II, when houses and industrial development began to replace pastures. Today, Woodbridge is a growing town where both residential and commercial development are on the rise.
Location, Location, Location
Located just 20 miles south of Washington, DC, Woodbridge is not only close to one of America’s most famed metropolitan areas but also an escape for those looking for a quieter experience. The town borders both the Occoquan and Potomac rivers, offering beautiful waterfront views. And the weather here is generally pleasant, offering the best of all four seasons: Winter temperatures typically fall as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer highs can reach into the high 80s. Woodbridge averages 14 inches of snowfall per year, well below the national average, so you don’t have to get out the shovels too often during the winter. Overall, it’s a lovely place to be, both for its location and its weather.
Plenty to See and Do
Of course, when you’re this close to DC, there are plenty of major landmarks and museums to explore, but you don’t have to leave town to have a good time. One of the most significant sites in Woodbridge is one of the county’s oldest known homes, Rippon Lodge, which is open for tours from spring through fall. Visit this 1747 home and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time! If you’d rather get back to nature, don’t miss the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, where you’ll find more than 200 bird species as well as a variety of plants and other types of wildlife. For a more active outing, plan a hike or an afternoon of fishing at Leesylvania State Park. But if your idea of exercise is shopping till you drop, you can do that in Woodbridge, too, at Potomac Mills.
Have a Bite and Stay a While
Southern food and Chesapeake Bay blue crab are staples of Virginia cuisine, but there’s plenty to eat in Woodbridge to suit any palate. You’ll find fine French fare at Bistro L’Hermitage, great barbecue at Dixie Bones, authentic Indian food at Taste of Tandoor, and great Italian at Presto! Pizza. And don’t miss a stop at Papa Dents Crabs: It’s a local favorite! When your appetite has been sated, stop and stay a while at one of the many hotels in Woodbridge.
