History of Manassas
More major Civil War battles were fought in the state of Virginia than in any other state, and two of them happened in historic Manassas. In 1861, the First Battle of Manassas, also known as the First Battle of Bull Run, saw Union forces marching toward Richmond defeated by Confederate forces, a result that shocked the North and galvanized the South. This would begin a campaign by the Confederate forces that culminated in another victory the following year in the Second Battle of Manassas, also known as the Second Battle of Bull Run.

The city of Manassas is the county seat of Prince William County, which is Virginia’s second-most-populous county. Prince William County is located on the Potomac River and is considered to be part of the Washington metropolitan area.
